Unless you have been living under a bush, you already know that English by Immersion began this year 2018 on January 15. Today, it has been a week since the students have been thrown into the trenches of the evaluation and the “placement test” to determine what position or level they will be in. Usually, after these exams are given, the Second French Revolution disperses in the English immersion teaching centers, where coordinators or office staff mostly suffer.

These are the reasons why bilingual education becomes apocalyptic in the first two weeks. What to do in those cases?

  1. But I came with my boyfriend from afar to be in the same course and now they separated us.

Young man, we understand what you are saying; Unfortunately, you have an intermediate level of English and your partner has a basic level. If we put it together then the English teacher will have to slow down the pace of the learning process so that it balances with his.

  1. I don't like that group they put me in.

You have a scholarship; and you are not normally asked on the scholarship form which course you would like to be on.

  1. I have very good English and they put me in intermediate. I want to be advanced.

We know that you have a degree in Applied Linguistics and that you can self-assess. However, it is the job of the Staff and the coordinators to establish the placement tests for the students. These results are given after taking a test that contains vocabulary, grammar and reading. Then an oral exam is given. I may talk a little more about those at intermediate, but if he was placed at intermediate it is because the results showed that level; not because pointed by a finger: “put that one in between.”

  1. I liked my first teacher. Now they gave me one that I don't even understand.

Your anger at being changed the first week when you already did your “choir” and met your teacher is well understood. But the rule is the rules. Although you were able to adapt the first week, we are sure that you will be able to find the same friendship if you put a positive mind.

Yes. Mistakes happen.

But the reasons mentioned above will only bring you conflict and bad experiences. The coordinators, teachers and office staff are highly trained people by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, and they will be there to help you; but try to embrace the reasons for the results and understand that there is a purpose for why you were put where you were.

We congratulate you for having had the great experience of returning your life to bilingual. You will not regret.
